Estuary Festival
I spent an afternoon cycling along the Thames between Erith and Dartford, my bike panniers stuffed with hand tools, including a saw, a drill needle and threat and metal snips. As I passed between semi derelict industrial sites and large expanses of grassland, intersected by creeks, I collected rubbish that had been discarded or blown off of neardy waste recycling centres. Acting with a magpie’s eye, I selected pieces that could be fitted together in interesting ways and displayed along the route, like a D.I.Y. sculpture trail. The idea was to take nothing and add nothing but in doing so, highlight the blatant disregard for the value of materials left scattered along our waterways, polluting natural habitats.
